Christmas Concert and Thank You Morning Tea
Next Wednesday week (11 December) is our Christmas Assembly and Parent Thank You morning tea. Without parent support, many of the activities and strategies at Kensington Primary School would not happen. We are very lucky to have enthusiastic parent helpers both in the classroom, on the sporting fields and representing the P&C and School Council.
If you have volunteered at the school, either as Parent Help or on a committee, please stay after the assembly and join us in a cuppa. Young children are welcome to join you, unfortunately we cannot cater for older children who may have finished school.
Free Dress Day
What amazing support we had from families of Kensington Primary School in our endeavours to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Last Friday the students turned out in the favourite clothes for our Free Dress Day and contributed generously with a gold coin donation. A sum of $634 was raised and will be forwarded to UNICEF for their appeal.
Thank you to Mrs Jane Windeyer who helped organise a food drop at the school. The amount of donations was staggering and took many car loads to transport it all to the shipping container, which should now be on its way to the worst hit areas of that country.
An outstanding effort on behalf of our community.
Gifted and Talented Program
From 2015, Gifted and Talented Programs will commence in Year 7 to coincide with the move of Year 7 students to the secondary school.
Gifted and Talented academic, languages and arts programs provide a unique and challenging curriculum designed to bring out the very best in gifted children.
Applications are now open for Year 5 students entering Year 7 in 2015. The selection process will take place when students are in Year 6. Applications close at 12.00noon on Monday 10 February 2014.
Parents of students in Year 5 would have received a flyer with the information required to make application.
Over the last weekend vandals entered the pre-primary yard and broke the handle on the cast iron water pump that the children use to make their creek flow. They also dragged carpets onto the lawn where they became drenched by the watering system. If you see trespassers in our school causing damage please ring School Watch on 1800 177 777 or the police on 131 444.
If you know someone who can weld a handle back together we would love to hear from them.
Olympic Swimmer and coach Visit Kensington Primary School
Patrick Murphy, an Australian Olympic sprint freestyle and backstroke swimmer, and Leigh Nugent, former head coach of the Australian swimming team visited the school two weeks ago to speak with our older children about being and doing the best you can in life. The inspirational talk motivated our children to ask some very searching questions of the two men and the influences on their lives that took them to the top of their sport.
Our Millennium ambassadors met with Catrina, Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Kids Inc, last week and worked on presenting an Aboriginal Dreamtime story that represented the importance of protecting species endemic to the Swan and Canning Rivers. The students were able to perform the play to two classes who enjoyed performances and the debrief afterwards.
Arriving Early at School
I have noticed that many students are arriving at school well before we commence duty at 8.15am. Some senior programs and running club do commence at 8.00am, however, these children are provided supervision by the teachers involved. With three incidents in the school requiring ambulance assistance in the last few months I’m very concerned that an accident may occur and staff won’t be on hand to properly manage the situation. Please do not allow your child to leave for school so that they arrive before 8.15am. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
A reminder to all students that you are required to leave the school promptly at the end of the day unless you are under the direct supervision of your parents/carers.
Each Christmas we encourage students to give non-perishable food to a charitable organisation. This year the hamper will go to the Salvation Army. Each classroom will have a box, and each child is encouraged to bring in an item such as jelly crystals, long life custard, tinned food, cordial, crisps and biscuits.
Please ensure that items are within their expiry date. The Christmas Hampers will be presented at the Christmas assembly on Wednesday December 11.
End of year reports will be sent home with students on Tuesday 17 December. The WAMSE Science and SOSE reports completed by students in Year 5 and 7 will be sent home at this time as well.
Unfortunately we are unable to hand out reports earlier than this due to the fact that they are printed in one run and this happens over the last weekend of the term and then have to be collated into class groups.
If you are leaving early for holidays please inform the front office so they can arrange to have reports posted to your choice of destination.
Pia Donovan, one of our Year Four students, will soon be leaving Perth with her family to fly to the United States of America to dance with the Centre of Rhythm Dance School. Pia will be performing at Disneyland and Universal Studios in Florida as well as on the “Oasis of the Seas” Caribbean cruise. She will also dance in the Macy’s Holiday Parade which is not usually offered to overseas groups.
We wish Pia and her family the very best.
The Shoulder Ache – by Lucy, Head Girl
Last Friday years 4-7 got to play Wheelchair Sports. We were all handed a wheelchair and were instructed on how to move. Our coach was a very nice guy called Rob who lost his legs in a car accident. Then we played wheelchair basketball, which was a lot of fun (except when we kept bumping into each other). We all had a really good time, though I think everyone’s shoulders ached for the next few days. Mine certainly did.
Congratulations to the following award winners from our last assembly on 20th November.
Being honest is being sincere, open, trustworthy and truthful. When people are honest they can be relied on not to lie, cheat or steal. If they tell you they like you, you know they really mean it because they would not say anything just to get their way or to make an impression.
Honesty is telling the truth no matter what. It is being truthful even when admitting the truth could make someone disappointed. Honest means not exaggerating something just to impress others.

It is that time of year when all music uniforms – skirts and trousers must be returned. They should be washed and ironed and returned on a hangar or in a bag labelled with your child’s name. The shirt is yours to keep; however if you have no other younger siblings or your child has outgrown the shirt, you may consider donating it to the school. If your daughter is leaving the school, the ribbons should also be returned, Black shoes that no longer fit could also be donated and gratefully received.
Guitar Ensemble Performance
The newly formed Guitar Ensemble will be performing at next week’s assembly. I am looking forward to their debut performance of “The Addams Family”.
Kensington Band Performance
The Band will be performing at the Yr 7 Graduation Assembly on December 18th.
Thank you parents and carers for your assistance throughout the year in encouraging your child to learn the words of songs, and ensuring your child attends rehearsals and performances. The children have performed brilliantly, and thanks to their parents, have presented themselves clean and neatly groomed.
