Interschool Cross Country Team
Congratulations to the students who participated in the VPPSSA Interschool Cross country event on Thursday 13 August 2015. The school had an outstanding win accumulating 200 more points than the second placed school. There were some great individual runs including the Year 3 girls, who placed 1st to 4th in the event. The course was around Harold Rossiter Park, it was very tough as it finished with an uphill section.
Thanks to Mrs Stanford for her thorough preparation of the team with the support of Mr Ryan Sedgwick and Ms Martine O’Connell. See the Sports Report for full results.
The Administration team and staff now have full access to all systems. The upgrade is now completed and it has been signed off this week so fingers crossed it all goes to plan!
The upgrade will mean that students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will now have an individual log on. The logon will be their first and surname followed by a simple password. Password rules become more complex as the students progress through the years. Teachers and ICT support staff will be instructing the children how to use this new system.
At the last Board elections Councillor Kevin Trent did not retain his seat as the Community representative; this brings to the end a very long association with the school.
I plan to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to the school at the next assembly 26 August 2015, followed by morning tea in the staffroom. An invitation has been sent to past school council/ board members, however if you know of someone who was associated with these groups and has since left the school I would ask that you please advise them of this event. RSVP to Sharon or Loretta 64368448 to assist with numbers for catering purposes.
I wish to amend the following information from the last newsletter regarding terms of appointment to the board:
Susan Tremain 1.5 years Mark Thompson 2.5 years
Night of the Notables
Several Year 5 Kensington PS students presented at the annual “Night of the Notables” as part of their Primary Enrichment Academic Centre (PEAC) program. The children identified, researched and then presented both a talk and static display on the life and achievements of a significant figure in history.
The students Zoe D, Joshua S, Lochlan B, Sean D and Elizabeth C are to be congratulated for their research skills and presentations. The displays are featured in the Library, please visit Monday to Wednesday (8.00 am -3.30pm) to read and view their work.
Thank you to Mrs Glassborow and her husband Rob for supporting the students both on last Friday and Monday night.
The mini champions of our eco system are highlighted in the current foyer display. Room 9 have been learning about Minibeasts and they have used this knowledge to create an amazing array of dioramas featuring many insects and spiders found at Kensington PS. As part of an integrated studies unit the children used the data from their observations to graph the total number of insects they found. They also completed detailed observations and descriptions as well as conducting research about the insects.
Thank you Mrs Bushen, Miss Pedley and the creative Year 3 students in Room 9 for highlighting these creatures.

Room 6, 7, 9 and 10 recently went on excursion to Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre in Wembley. The excursion presented a unique opportunity for the students to explore a real Western Australian wetland while discovering scientific, historical, geographical and cultural concepts, skills and values at the same time. The classes either participated in a Mud n Minibeasts or a Swamp Safari and from all reports the student’s behaviour and level of engagement was excellent. For more information and photos read Matthew A’s excursion report in classroom news.
Thank you to all the parents who assisted with supervision on the excursions.

Rm 9 Excursion to Herdsman Lake WIldlife Centre
Room 9 has just completed their study of minibeasts. We have done all sorts of fun things like classifying the insects, observing the insects around the school. We made a tally of the insects and arachnids we found and used the information to make a graph of our results.
On Monday the 17th of August we went to Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre to finish our unit of minibeasts. Mr Mifflin was very impressed at how much we know already!

Rainbows Program: Peer Support for students experiencing Loss and Transitions
Rainbows is a helpful supportive program designed especially for children who are going through loss/ transitions arising from death and/or separation in the family.
When a loss/transition occurs in a family, the whole family is affected. Even though it appears to be a grown up problem, it does have a profound effect on the children it touches. If a family member dies, or separation/divorce occurs, not only do adults grieve, but children grieve also. Because of their age, and short life experiences, children may find it difficult to verbalise their feelings.
Children need guidance and compassion to bounce back. Rainbows offer coping tools to build the confidence and self-esteem of these children to facilitate their bouncing back.
I am exploring the possibility of commencing the program for students in Year 3. If you feel your child would benefit from being in this program and would like him/her to participate, please invite your child to pick a registration form from their classroom or the front office. Consent of both parents is required for children to be able to participate in the program.
Parents with children from other year levels are welcome to let me know the current need level by completing the registration form placed in the front office too. Simply complete the registration form, return it to the school, in an envelope marked To: Chaplain, Confidential – Rainbows by Tues, 1 Sep.
