Pupil Free Day – 18th August
A reminder that the pupil free day is next Monday. The school will be closed to allow staff to participate in professional learning. This is our final training in a series of four days of training. We intend to revert to having pupil free days on the first day of the term again.
Assessment and Reporting Policy
The school has recently updated its Assessment and Reporting Policy, which outlines in detail how the school assesses students and reports their achievement to parents. The latest policy was created by KPS staff and was recently approved by the school board. You can read the new policy on the school website under 'For Parent'/ ‘Forms & Documents’ or by clicking the following link: Forms & Documents - Kensington Primary School

What's Been Happening...
Student Council Fundraiser – The Big Freeze
The Student Council are thrilled to announce the outcome of their recent charity fundraiser. They raised $1002, more than doubling their target of $400. As the generosity of the school community enabled them to achieve their target, the student councillors carried through on their commitment to hop into a big bath of very cold water in front of the rest of their peers at recess. Thank you to everyone who donated and to the student councillors for their commitment. It was lovely to see so many people in their pyjamas too.

NAIDOC Week
Following our Welcome to Country and performance from Mooditj Mob from Wesley College, the students have been learning about Aboriginal culture and histories. To share what they had learned, we sent the children to different classes to sit in a yarning circle and present to the other students. This meant the children heard what every class in the school had learned about. The children did a fantastic job.

Half-time Freestyle Football at the Eagles v Adelaide Game
20 Kensington AFL players played at half-time at the AFL games last Sunday. It was an amazing experience to play at Optus Stadium. We had a lot of fun and nearly managed to cheer the Eagles home for a win. Thanks to the West Coast Eagles for providing the opportunity for us to play.
Upcoming Events...
Book Week Parade
Wednesday 20th August is our Book Week Parade. Mr McLarty (P&C President) has organised a special author visitor for this event, Craig Silvey, author of Runt. We look forward to his visit and seeing what characters the children dress up as.
School Board
Last week the board met to review the updated Assessment and Reporting policy with Mr Griffiths and Terms of Reference (to replace the Constitution and old Terms of Reference). These are now on our website. Miss Adelle Harris also presented to the Board on how the Wellbeing Dog program is going, sharing all the positive outcomes for students and staff. The Principal’s Report included updates on the facilities, the school review in Term 1, 2026 and the upcoming National School Opinion Survey. It also included a discussion about the two options for replacing the faction names – WA animal names in Noongar or the Noongar words for the four elements. These will be presented to the students for a vote later this term.

DUCKs Dads and Kids - Tunnel Walk, Swan View
Sunday 30 Aug 2025, 1:30 pm
Hi, Amazing KPS Dads and Father-figures. As chosen by you at the start of the year, we have, by special request, a Dads and Kids Tunnel Walk along the Heritage Trail in Swan View. This is a first for DUCKs, and we would love to see you there. The gravel heritage trail is flat as it is an old railway line route and includes the old railway tunnel (the highlight!) about 800 metres from the car park. It is a flat and easy walk for most kids, and a relatively easy stroller walk for dads with strollers that have bigger wheels for the gravel. The waterfall at Hovea Falls, east of the tunnel, should be flowing well and be spectacular in the late afternoon sun, and it is a worthy challenge to walk to for older kids and energetic youngsters (who will sleep well afterwards!).
Details:
Event: DUCKs Dads and Kids Tunnel Walk, Swan View
(old Heritage Trail in John Forrest National Park)
Location: Meet at the Swan View Railway Heritage Trail Hub carpark, Pechey Road, Swan View
Find on Google Maps at: https://maps.app.goo.gl/T55AKX3GcvVcqTVr7
Date: Saturday 30 August 2025
Time: Meet at 1:15pm (or a little earlier) for a 1:30pm group photo and head off walking.
We look forward to seeing you there, Dads, for a fun afternoon out with the kids in the outdoor and for an unforgettable experience for both you and the kids. For extra fun, get the kids to bring a headlamp for the tunnel or a torch. The tunnel is about 400m long, with old coarse rail ballast rock underfoot and very dark, so amazing memories to be made. It should be an amazing day out. Really looking forward to seeing you all there if you can make it.

Thank you to all the dads and kids who joined in the fabulous Paper Planes and Pizza event on Sunday 3 August 2025, in the Undercover Area at school. It was fabulous to see so many dads involved and sharing their skills and ideas with their kids, and supporting the kids in their creativity. We saw many smiling faces, despite the wind, rain and cold outside, and had many "fly off" heats with the paper planes, with friendly competition for furthest flown and longest time in the air. There were some really novel airplanes built. Many thanks To Andrea Peretti for sourcing and printing out a range of paper plane instructions for dads, and Geoff Baker for providing reams of paper and a large box of marker pens for the kids to decorate their planes (and generally be artistic). Thank you to all the dads that put their pizza orders in early - the pizzas really hit the spot after two hours of folding, flying, talking, supporting and encouraging our kids and getting to know new dads. I was particularly encouraged to see a grandfather join us as well, with his son (the dad) and his KPS child. Let's do more of that, dads. If your dads are around, please invite them along!
Thank you also to all the dads who attended the recent Dads Night at Victoria Park Hotel on 7 August 2025 for a friendly chat, making new friends and sharing good conversation over a quiet drink or meal. Thanks so much to Malav Oza for once again organising a great night out for the guys. We're hoping to make this a regular event, so good to see familiar faces and the new faces of dads just joining the school, and dads wanting to connect. You're always welcome dads, so drop in and say Hi.
Thank you to all the dads and kids who got involved last term at our Mini Golf at Collier Park event and also for the fabulous Lego Masters at South Perth Library - Great effort everyone.
Once again thanks for all your efforts dads making a difference in your children's lives, supporting their learning, helping them feel heard and seen, showing love and kindness, and bringing-up beautiful people to make for a better world.
I look forward to seeing you at the Tunnel Walk if you can make it.
How to join DUCKs
Dads: To join the DUCKs group, please email DUCKS.KPS@gmail.com or ask another dad who is already in DUCKs to send through your details so we can add you.
By signing up to the Tunnel Walk, we can just add you to the group as well.
