eRideables (includes e-Scooters)
We have had reports from community members that they have seen children from our school riding e-scooters across Canning Hwy (not using the tunnel). Reports suggest some are children on their own and some are possibly with adults. This practice is concerning as it is not safe or legal (and fines apply). For your information, below are some of the rules around children on e-rideables. You can find out more from eRideables (www.wa.gov.au)
Children under 16 are not permitted to ride devices that can go faster than 10km/h. ($50 fine)
Children under 16 can ride low-powered electric scooters which do not exceed 200w or 10km/h. These motorised scooters are not considered eRideables and are governed by their own regulations under Road Traffic Code 2000.
eRideables can be ridden on:
- footpaths, bicycle paths and shared paths
- roads where there are no dividing lines AND the speed limit is 50 km/h or less
- bicycle lanes (on roads with a speed limit of 50km/h or less).
It is illegal to ride on:
- roads with a dividing line ($100 fine)
- roads where the speed limit is more than 50km/h ($100 fine, or $500 if speed limit exceeds 70km/h)
- any path designated as ‘no wheeled devices’ ($50 fine)
- any path or road where a ‘no bicycle’ sign or marking applies. ($50 fine)
When using a separated path, eRideables should use the bicycle part. It is illegal to ride in the section marked for pedestrians.
Road rules and safety for eRideables
One person per device
Never carry passengers or animals on your eRideable. ($50 fine)
Wear a helmet
Remember to wear your helmet ($50 fine). Any approved bicycle, skateboard or motorcycle helmet can be worn when riding an eRideable. Make sure any helmet you purchase complies with the current Australian Standard (AS/NZS 2063).

Enrolling for Kindergarten for 2024 Now Open

If your child will be four years old by 30 June 2024, enrol them in Kindergarten now. Applications close on 21 July 2023. Find out more by contacting the school or visiting education.wa.edu.au/enrol.
Pre-Primary applications for enrolment will be sent home soon to current Kindy students.
Winter Uniforms
Just a reminder that students should wear school uniform fleece jackets and microfibre tracksuit tops for warmth during winter. These are available through the uniform shop. The shop is in the donga (near the office) and is open on Thursday mornings (8:20 - 8:50am). Orders can also be placed via the Team App. Students must wear the same bottle green colour for all items of clothing not purchased from the uniform shop.
Provide feedback on the reform of Western Australia’s disability legislation
The Department of Communities is seeking feedback on issues and matters that should be reflected in WA’s disability legislation.
The Department of Communities wants to know your thoughts, experiences and ideas to ensure new disability legislation is appropriate to meet the needs and expectations of people with disability and the community.
The consultation will help the Department of Communities:
- better understand the preferences and needs of people, organisations and the community that are engaged in the disability sector in WA
- assess options and develop recommendations for consideration by the State Government to inform the drafting of new legislation.
To find out more about the consultation process, refer to Have your say: Reforming Western Australia’s disability legislation.
Submissions close 11:59 pm, Saturday 10 June 2023.

Upcoming Events
Reconciliation Action Plan
This week is National Reconciliation Week. If you read the West Australian newspaper, you will have noticed the front cover of Monday’s paper was written in Noongar and English and a large section of the paper was devoted to articles about this topic.
Last week, the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) committee met to discuss what was required for the school to develop its own RAP. Thank you to the parents who attended this meeting with staff representatives, including our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Officer – (AIEO) Mrs Jetta.
Our next committee meeting is planned for Tuesday 20th June at 2pm in the staffroom. At this meeting we will start work on developing our vision statement.
Walk for Reconciliation
The Student Council will attend the Walk for Reconciliation at Kings Park, which entails moving through a series of stations that showcase Aboriginal culture. Starting with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, students will journey through Kaarta Koomba (Kings Park) engaging in a range of cultural immersion opportunities including truth-telling, dancing, arts workshops and an opportunity to learn more about The Voice. Students will then return to school and start planning events for the whole school celebration of NAIDOC week at the start of Term 3.

Artist in Residence – Mosaic Workshop
Each year the P&C funds an artist in residence program. Last week we began a two-year project with a mosaic artist to create a series of murals on the Noongar season of Makuru. As the classrooms around the quadrangle are now called Makuru, the first two panels of this mural have been installed in the quadrangle. They look truly lovely. The children did a great job. Next year this project will be finished by the students who did not participate this year. We thank the P&C for their ongoing support of this artist in residence program.
Makuru Mosaic Mural

The first panel shows a Sturt Desert Pea, raindrops, dragonflies, a White-winged Triller and Blue Leschenaultia. The second panel shows an echidna, female Blue Wren, Blueberry Lily and a kangaroo with a joey. All reflect the Makuru Noongar season that typically occurs around June - July.
Student Voice Forum
On 9th May the Student Council met with representatives from each Year 1-6 classroom. They asked the students for feedback on what they liked about the school, what they didn’t like, any new ideas to improve the school and any ideas for charities we could support as a school (giving back to the wider community). In the last newsletter we reported the responses to the first question – things they like. In this newsletter we are reporting the things they didn’t like. The Student Councillors have begun to look at what we can feasibly do about this and to look at the new ideas the students had.

Foyer Display - Room 8

Last week, we celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime at Kensington P.S. Along with students from around the country, we tuned in to watch the story read from Sydney Zoo by the author, Rebecca Young, and illustrator, Heath McKenzie. After watching the story with our buddy class, Room 8 had so much fun following the illustrator's guide through how to draw our own sloths. We are so proud of the sloths we have created and are very excited for the school to see them hanging in the foyer. The day was a great way to promote reading for fun and enjoyment.

Walk to School Friday 19th May

It was great to see 75% of our students walk to school. We observed a huge drop in the number of cars through Kiss and Wave in the morning. Congratulations to P1 and Room 8 for having 91% of their students walk safely to school. Why not continue to walk to school regularly? It will be a win for your health (physical and mental) and the environment. Thanks to Mrs Stanford and her wonderful faction leaders for organising and promoting this event. Thanks also to the Eagles for attending.

Rugby Clinics
Thanks to Rugby WA and the Western Force for conducting clinics in some PE classes over the last two weeks. The students were introduced to the game of rugby and learnt some basic skills. They enjoyed the sessions and had fun.

Running Club
Running Club continues Tuesday and Friday mornings on the oval or the running track from 8.00am – 8.30am. New runners are welcome. Parents will be sent a Consent2Go to give permission once their child has attended their first session.

2023 Colour Run - Fundraising update
It took us a little longer than we wanted to finalise the total funds raised for the Colour run (held on Friday 5th May) but that was only because you're all so generous.
The final amount raised was $11,380 which totally smashed the previous record of $7,331.50. Less the costs of prizes and the powder that sees the event raising well over $10,000 for the first time ever.
Thank you all so much for your fantastic efforts, it is really great to be a part of such a kind and caring community!
Prizes and certificates were handed out to children at the School Assembly today. Below is a list of our top ten (actually 11, due to a tie for 10th) fundraisers.

We have a wheely bin and a wool bale in the quadrangle where you can deposit containers, help the environment and fundraise for the school all at once. We hope, with sufficient support from everyone, to expand this program.
