Principal's Message
Faction Athletics Carnival
Thanks to Mrs Stanford for organising our carnival. Also, a big thanks to all our parent helpers and our staff for helping and supporting this great community event. We were very fortunate with the weather. The results of the carnival are detailed below.
Morning Drop Off
We are starting to see a number of students arriving before 8am. We do not start supervising students until 8:15am. If you need someone to look after your children before this time, then you can use the OSHClub service. Please also remember that any student in Year 1-6 who arrives before 8:30am must go straight to the quadrangle. Kindy and Pre-primary students must be supervised by their parent/guardian before 8:30am.
Mental Health/Wellbeing Absences
It is a legal requirement for all children from Pre-primary to Year 6 to attend primary school. The school must seek reasons for any absences. At 10am daily, we send out SMS messages to prompt parents to send these reasons in. We also send out fortnightly absence notices seeking this information for any absences that we have not received communication from parents.
People speak of taking mental health days or wellbeing days off work or school, but is this a good strategy? The article below addresses this issue. It is from the ABC website and makes some interesting points, particularly about resiliency and building positive habits.
It is also important to realise that every school day missed corresponds to a drop in student achievement as assessed by standardised tests such as NAPLAN.
School Photo Day
School Photo Day is coming up in Week 8. A couple of weeks ago classroom teachers sent home your child's school photo order envelopes.
Online orders are made via the below link with the password listed on your child's envelope.
All Orders must be in by Tuesday 3rd September 2024
Ordering Sibling Photos
- You have two options to order sibling photos. You can either do it online or by using an envelope.
- If you choose to order by envelope, you can collect the envelopes from the front office.
- Medhat will be available each morning of Week 8. He will start taking photos from 8:25am until school starts.
- Deadline for Orders - Please note that if you want sibling photos, you must place and pay for your order by Tuesday, 3rd September. If you miss the deadline, sibling photos will not be taken.

Foyer Display - Science
This term, the Year 1 and 2 students are learning about scientific concepts in the area of Physical Sciences. The Year 1 students are learning about sound and light energy in the topic "Look! Listen!" while the Year 2 students are learning about forces as part of the topic "Push-Pull". Please visit the foyer display over the next two weeks to view some of the work and activities that the Year 1 and 2 students have undertaken in the Science Lab so far this term.

What's Coming Up
Battery Recycling
The school is working with the City of South Perth to provide the community with a safe and convenient place to dispose of batteries. EcoCycle is the company the City is working with on this. We hope to have the Smart Bin installed by the end of term in order to provide the service from Term 4 onwards.

Book Week
Yesterday we had our annual Book Week Parade. Thank you to Mrs Rankin-Hume, Miss Harris, Mrs Mehnert and Miss Mehnert for their skit. Thank you also to Mrs Brook for organising the parade. Below is a picture of the lovely “concrete garden” made by our students on Monday. The Concrete Garden by Bob Graham was one of the short-listed books this year, so Mrs Rankin-Hume organised the students to make their own outside the library. In our next newsletter we will update you on all the other activities that occurred this week.
If you are looking for some good book recommendations for children, the shortlisted and winning Children’s Book Council of Australia books are a good place to find some. 2024 Book of the Year Award winners - The Children’s Book Council of Australia (cbca.org.au).
